Deep practice is the path followed by those who work to develop expertise and mastery in their field. Solid research of expert performance tells us that mastery in any field or endeavor is not based on genetics, family background, intelligence, formal education or even talent. Instead, we know that becoming a true expert comes from hard work. In other words, expertise comes from practice.
But it is not just any kind of practice. It takes what is known as deliberate practice.
Many people have been in the same job or profession for 10, 20, even 30 years. But even with all these years of experience, only few of these people are considered as experts and masters in their fields. Why is that? Developing mastery takes more than mere experience.
It takes a special kind of practice – the kind of practice that takes you to the edge of your abilities, and then a little beyond. By practicing right at the edge of your ability, you develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that the average person never acquires. This is deep practice.
Deep Practice with Dr. Gary:
Dr. Gary will apply the approach and principles laid out above to help you develop advanced chart reading skills. He will lead you through actual deep practice exercises on chart reading, bar-bar-bar.
Many principles of both basic and advanced chart reading will be practiced deliberately over the course of the program.
