Trading Dreams

November 20, 2011 by DrGary 3 Comments

Do you have trading dreams?  You should have, and they should be big ones.

Helen is reading Open, Andre Agassi’s autobiography.  In it, Agassi talks about the importance of dreams.  Shaken after a poor performance at the French open, Andre’s trainer, Gil, tells him a few words his mother always says:

“‘Que lindo es sonar despierto.’ How lovely it is to dream while you are awake.  Dream while you are awake.  Anybody can dream while they’re asleep, but you need to dream all the time, and say your dreams out loud, and believe in them.”

Traders should write their dreams down and keep them handy, too.  Having dreams is very important.  Dreaming your dreams while awake is very powerful.

Example of Dreaming While Awake

Here is an example outside trading.  This man has a huge dream.  He is 40 years old and, as you will see, accomplishes a goal on the very edge of human ability.  Note the grace and style displayed on what I can assure you is exceptionally difficult, both physically and psychologically.  And the difficulties don’t really start until he changes out his ropes.  This was an incredible accomplishment.

And, be sure to watch through to the end where he takes a major fall.  Note how he pulls his belayer off the ground.   The 75-foot whipper is scary for anyone, even an accomplished climber.   But it didn’t deter him.  Keep Monsieur Petit in mind the next time you get scared in a trade.

Thank you very much for this article Dr. Gary.

As my basic constitution I do not accept limitations, and when it comes to my trading I have my dreams and goals, but then I have read stuff here and there and have been thinking maybe I am unrealistic. But, when now thinking about it again I say “Out the window with it!”. To my opinion limited thinking is not just an obstacle to reach ones exact goals and dreams, but it will also prevent one in reaching what would be ones highest achievement even if it is not as far as the initial dream and goal.

So my motto is: Unlimited reality!

      Hi Lars,

Thanks for your comments. You raise a very good point. As humans, we can certainly be negative. One day we may create a dream, but on another day our mood may sour, we turn against ourselves and step on our dream. In a word, don’t! You may be down or furstrated or worse, but never step on your dream. Think about it this way: if you have no dream where are you? A strong dream, dreamt while awake, not only gives you inspiration and motivation, it gives you direction, as well. Given the choice, I will always choose to be an inspired person who is motivated and has direction over an aimless person governed by his or her emotions.

Thank you for your additional words Dr. Gary.

After reading them I came to think about the book “The Power of Intention” by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer again which I purchased a couple of years ago. In one of the pages he wrote: “Remain confident that through continued reliance on your imagination, your assumptions are materializing into reality”. Another one is: “Your imagination allows you the fabulous luxury of thinking from the end”. Very good stuff I think : ) . Dr. Dyer is one of my favorite authors.
